The racing discussion describes a method based on recent poor performance and says it was overused and lost effectiveness. It also cautions that performance tables do not, by themselves, provide a money-making system.
Follow adoption as well as outcomes
If participants recognize an idea, their decisions can alter prices or the opportunity itself. This does not prove that every published method immediately stops working. It means that persistence must be investigated rather than assumed.
Worked example
A fictional event once offered a large payoff because few noticed it. Later, more participants act on it and the offered payoff becomes smaller, even if the event remains just as likely.
Case connection
Competitors and tools evolve. Yesterday’s relative advantage is a question to re-examine, not a permanent entitlement.
Deep Blue meets Kasparov
Source-grounded facts
IBM’s Deep Blue defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov in a six-game match.
Context
IBM set out to build a chess computer capable of beating the reigning world champion. The contest gave both sides a clearly defined board, legal moves and tournament time controls.
Outcome
Deep Blue won the match 3.5–2.5. This demonstrated a specific competitive capability under chess rules, rather than proving superiority at every activity requiring judgment.
- In 1996, Deep Blue won the first game, but Kasparov recovered to win the six-game match 4–2.
- The team improved the computer’s evaluation function and endgame databases before the rematch.
- In May 1997, each side won one early game and the next three were drawn. Deep Blue then won the sixth.
Case analysis
The opponent in the next contest may not be the opponent you previously beat. Better evaluation, preparation or tools can change the relative advantage while the visible rules remain the same. When examining a once-useful market method, ask what other participants have learned and how their response could change either the price or the payoff.
Try it
Write two ways a method could become less useful: one through a changed outcome distribution and one through a changed price.
