The “Method” passage describes observation, measurement, hypotheses, testing and revision. It invokes falsifiability and warns that an explanation compatible with every possible state is not a scientific theory.

Write the rejection rule first

A claim is difficult to learn from if every unfavorable result can be explained away. Before testing it, define the measurement and the result that would make you reject or narrow it. This does not eliminate uncertainty; it makes disagreement with the data visible.

Worked example

Suppose the claim is that a defined event raises the next-day average return. Decide the event threshold, comparison group and evaluation period before seeing the outcomes.

Case connection

A test is useful because the claim can fail it. An unsuccessful replication invites investigation rather than automatic dismissal.

Psychology’s replication project

Source-grounded facts

Researchers attempted to replicate 100 psychology findings; 36% reached statistical significance in the same direction.

Context

A published finding answers a question in one study. The Reproducibility Project: Psychology asked whether independent repetitions would support a selected group of published findings.

Outcome

The project exposed uncertainty about reproducibility. A failed significance test is not automatically proof that the original claim was false or fraudulent; interpretation requires examining methods, precision and conditions.

  1. Researchers attempted to replicate 100 psychology findings.
  2. They compared the new evidence with the original results, including direction, significance and effect sizes.
  3. The Center for Open Science reports that 36% reached statistical significance in the same direction; replication effect sizes were about half the originals.

Case analysis

The valuable part of a test is the possibility that it will disappoint the researcher. If an unfavourable result is always dismissed as the wrong context, the claim becomes protected from evidence. State in advance what would justify rejection, a narrower claim or another study. That response is more informative than either automatic acceptance or automatic dismissal.
